A Day at the OC Fair

Having grown up in New York City, I never experienced a county fair proper. We had street fairs – small, 2-3 block celebrations of a particular neighborhood and its culture – but nothing like the sprawling orgies of fried food, livestock contests, questionably-fair games, and scary rides that mark the height of summer and draw people in from all over the state. It was time to change that! This month, I headed to the OC Fair. Located in Costa Mesa, it’s one of California’s 70+ fairs and festivals, which runs from July 15 to August 14.

$22 ($10 parking + $12 admission) and one long security line later, I was in the door. It sucks having to go through airport-like security, but I guess that’s a product of the times we live in.

By far the most compelling feature of the fair is its sheer diversity. A few steps from the entrance, you can pick up some BBQ ribs, sit in a Toyota, buy a swimming pool for your house, or ride the Ferris wheel:

Whee! Aint afraid of no heights!

An important part of fairs is eating foods of questionable nutritional value. I got to try a fried Oreo for the first time. Yes, it sounds impossible – how could a delicate sandwich cookie survive 350+ degree temperatures. But I’m here to tell you – they’re real, and they’re spectacular!

I also stuffed my face with ribs until I could barely move, but that’s another story…

The most important part of the fair, for me, was the Arts and Crafts section. Knitters and crocheters from all over Orange County submitted their work for award consideration, and quite a few of them were simply inspiring. These baby cardigans by Jean Brac almost make me wishI had a kid of my own. Almost. 🙂

As I write this, I’m nearing the end of my first sweater. Seeing these makes me want to knit another one – something as colorful as summer in California.

I am absolutely hooked on Amigurumi. Here, OC Fair didn’t disappoint either:

Amigurumi explosion!

I especially love the diver, as well as the cacti – no need to water your crochet plants! Perhaps I’ll submit something of my own next year. I may be a journeyman fiber artist, but as I practice and improve, I would like to hone my own instincts for design – and let my own personality shine through in my work – just like these creations!
